Inclusive Surf Sessions – 2.º Edition

After the success of our first event, we’re thrilled to announce the second edition of our #InclusiveSurf sessions!

Sports play a crucial role in the lives of individuals with disabilities or special needs, serving as both a stimulus and a means of physical, psychological, and social development. Sports also have a significant role in promoting the #EUvalues that drive us.

This initiative is part of the “impact projects,” one of the facets of Europe XXI, aimed at realizing tangible actions within the community.

That’s why Europe XXI has teamed up with Parlamento Europeu – Gabinete em Portugal and Surfing Life Club for an inclusive surf session taking place on October 14th, 10:00 AM, at Matosinhos Beach.

Will you join us?

Opinion Article: “Don’t stop fighting for EU”

Summer CEmp 2023: How an adventure in Alto Minho further strengthened the European sentiment of dozens of young people.

If there is a growing need today to engage young people in political participation, there is also a growing need to connect them with the European project. The reality is that we often take for granted all the good that the European Union has brought us, but we tend to ignore how fragile this grand political project is and how much it requires the dedication of everyone, especially the younger generation, not only to sustain itself but, above all, to reinvent itself.

After four days focused on European topics as diverse as the European Pillar of Social Rights or the possibility of expanding to new Member States, I left Ponte da Barca with a renewed sense of hope. Hope in a generation of young people who deeply believe in the European project and are committed to strengthening it.

Before I share my own experience, I cannot fail to acknowledge the work and dedication of the entire team at the Representation of the European Commission in Portugal, who make this event possible. Fantastic and tireless individuals.

Summer CEmp provides approximately 40 participants, along with all the other contributors, from speakers to government members or foreign dignitaries, journalists, mentors, and guests, a unique and immersive experience about Europe. Unlike other summer schools where the focus is on imparting a lot of knowledge in a short span, Summer CEmp places emphasis on personal interaction and the experience each participant takes with them, which undoubtedly shapes their view of the European Union, turning them into ambassadors of this common home. In reality, the European Union is, first and foremost, a project of people and for people.

Often, we do not realize how much our lives are influenced by decisions made by European Institutions. This is precisely why one of the challenges posed to participants of Summer CEmp was to seek, in our daily lives, in our local communities, public investments co-funded by the European Union. To search for those “EU flags” scattered across the country, which clearly demonstrate how present Europe is in our lives, from healthcare to education, transportation, and sports.

One positive aspect that stood out for me was the fact that the event took place in an inland region of the country. Often, when we think of the European Union, we envision something distant and removed from our reality, but here it was precisely the opposite. The European Union came to us. To Alto Minho, to Ponte da Barca.

At the end of this fantastic experience, all I can do is express my gratitude for the opportunity and recommend to other young people to participate in a Summer CEmp. Portugal is the only country in the European Union to host this event, and that should make us even prouder and more motivated to take part.

I left Ponte da Barca with the reinforced certainty that Portugal’s place is within the European Union and that the responsibility of being its ambassadors lies within each of us, at home, in school, in our hometowns, and in all the places we go.

It is essential that in the upcoming European elections, the Portuguese send a strong signal to reaffirm the path we want to follow – that of Europe. I conclude with this challenge to all young people and those who have been young for longer: never stop believing, fighting, and being ambassadors of the European project. Our future begins with us and the projects we want to pursue.

On April 17, 2023, representatives from Europe XXI had the honor of meeting with the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic team, on behalf of his Excellency, the President of the Republic of Portugal, Professor Doutor Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to discuss key critical issues for the country’s and Europe’s future. Maria Amélia Paiva, Ambassador and Diplomatic Consultant for International Relations of the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic, the Diplomatic Advisor to the President, Dr. João Ricardo Mendes, Pedro Ferreirinha, Carolina Marques, Francisco Lima, and Clara Alves, all members of the Board of Directors of Europe XXI.

The discussion covered Europe XXI’s mission, vision, goals, and past, present, and future projects. The key issues addressed were: i) the management and execution of European funds in Portugal; ii) the country’s role as a bridge between Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa; and iii) the importance of collaboration to tackle the challenges faced by both Portugal and the European Union (EU).

One of the primary topics discussed was the importance of the efficient and transparent management of European funds for Portugal’s socioeconomic development. Europe XXI presented current statistics on the absorption rate, priority areas, and ongoing projects financed by these funds. The organization highlighted specific challenges faced by the country, such as bureaucracy, a lack of information, and coordination between different entities. Additionally, Europe XXI pointed out the issue of low funds allocation for the maritime and fisheries sector in the Portugal 2020 plan.

The discussion also addressed challenges related to bureaucracy, lack of information, fraud, and coordination among different entities in executing these funds. Europe XXI proposed several measures to optimize the use of European funds, such as simplification of processes, increased transparency, and strengthened cooperation between organizations and government entities. Furthermore, the organization recommended implementing a more robust monitoring and evaluation system, creating a communication and collaboration platform, and investing in capacity building and training for those involved in executing these projects.

Moreover, Portugal’s unique geopolitical position places it at the crossroads of Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa, providing a crucial bridge between these regions. Its rich history and culture also offer a solid foundation for establishing diplomatic and trade relationships with other countries. Additionally, the Portuguese language serves as a unifying factor, promoting cooperation and mutual understanding among the Lusophone nations. Portugal can exert leadership in several key areas, such as security, energy, environment, culture and education.

Lastly, the meeting concluded with Europe XXI’s reaffirming its commitment to working with the Presidency of the Republic to build a better future for Portugal and the EU. The organization emphasized the need for all actors involved to come together around common objectives. Europe XXI is ready to listen and collaborate with the President of the Republic and his team to contribute to Portugal’s success on the international stage.
