On April 17, 2023, representatives from Europe XXI had the honor of meeting with the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic team, on behalf of his Excellency, the President of the Republic of Portugal, Professor Doutor Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to discuss key critical issues for the country’s and Europe’s future. The meeting was attended by Dra. Maria Amélia Paiva, Ambassador and Diplomatic Consultant for International Relations of the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic, the Diplomatic Advisor to the President, Dr. João Ricardo Mendes, Pedro Ferreirinha, Carolina Marques, Francisco Lima, and Clara Alves, all members of the Board of Directors of Europe XXI.
The discussion covered Europe XXI’s mission, vision, goals, and past, present, and future projects. The key issues addressed were: i) the management and execution of European funds in Portugal; ii) the country’s role as a bridge between Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa; and iii) the importance of collaboration to tackle the challenges faced by both Portugal and the European Union (EU).
One of the primary topics discussed was the importance of the efficient and transparent management of European funds for Portugal’s socioeconomic development. Europe XXI presented current statistics on the absorption rate, priority areas, and ongoing projects financed by these funds. The organization highlighted specific challenges faced by the country, such as bureaucracy, a lack of information, and coordination between different entities. Additionally, Europe XXI pointed out the issue of low funds allocation for the maritime and fisheries sector in the Portugal 2020 plan.
The discussion also addressed challenges related to bureaucracy, lack of information, fraud, and coordination among different entities in executing these funds. Europe XXI proposed several measures to optimize the use of European funds, such as simplification of processes, increased transparency, and strengthened cooperation between organizations and government entities. Furthermore, the organization recommended implementing a more robust monitoring and evaluation system, creating a communication and collaboration platform, and investing in capacity building and training for those involved in executing these projects.
Moreover, Portugal’s unique geopolitical position places it at the crossroads of Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa, providing a crucial bridge between these regions. Its rich history and culture also offer a solid foundation for establishing diplomatic and trade relationships with other countries. Additionally, the Portuguese language serves as a unifying factor, promoting cooperation and mutual understanding among the Lusophone nations. Portugal can exert leadership in several key areas, such as security, energy, environment, culture and education.
Lastly, the meeting concluded with Europe XXI’s reaffirming its commitment to working with the Presidency of the Republic to build a better future for Portugal and the EU. The organization emphasized the need for all actors involved to come together around common objectives. Europe XXI is ready to listen and collaborate with the President of the Republic and his team to contribute to Portugal’s success on the international stage. Together, we can build a stronger and more united Europe, capable of facing the challenges of the 21st century.
